You’ll begin your journey at Province Park, a peaceful green space on the eastern edge of town where locals walk, bike, and fish. Surrounded by wetlands and native trees, it’s the perfect place to stretch your legs and breathe in the fresh Johnson County air. Don’t miss the old WPA-era stonework throughout the park, a favorite photo-op for both locals and visitors.
From here, you’ll hop on the Franklin Historic Greenway Trail, a well-kept paved path that winds its way through town, offering a unique blend of nature and community.
Follow the trail westward, and soon you’ll find yourself near Youngs Creek Park, a vibrant outdoor space with wide open lawns and playgrounds. If you’re visiting in summer, check for events at the park’s amphitheater or splash pad to cool off. Take the Main Street connector trail to the north to access the park.
If you continue north on the Main Steet trail, you’ll be guided into Downtown Franklin, a charming and walkable historic district where red-brick buildings and vintage lampposts tell stories of the town’s past. Across from the historic Johnson County Courthouse, make a stop at Court Street Café, a cozy local coffee shop housed in a century-old structure. Their handcrafted espresso drinks and homemade baked goods make for a perfect mid-morning refuel.
From Court Street, take a quick detour down Jefferson Street, with connector trails on both sides, where you can browse through boutiques like Middle Davids Artisan Candles, pop into Wild Geese Bookshop, or admire local art and antique finds. Or if you’re hungry, grab an ice cream cone or sit-down at one of Franklin’s farm-to-fork restaurants
As you meander down Jefferson Street, you’ll rejoin the Historic Greenway Trail at Hurricane Creek. Head south and you’ll return to Province Park.
Whether you’re out for a quiet nature walk or a vibrant community exploration, Franklin’s trail-connected downtown lets you enjoy the best of both worlds: small-town charm and natural beauty, all in one seamless stroll.
