Central Canal Towpath
Indy's only compacted stone regional trail, the waterside Towpath takes you from Broad Ripple, past Butler University and the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, and into Riverside Park.
Stretching 13 miles with relatively few street crossings, Fall Creek Greenway features scenic creekside views along Central Indiana’s second-largest waterway, Fall Creek. Stretching from near the IU and Purdue Indianapolis campuses, past the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and on to Fort Harrison State Park, the trail offers a satisfying rhythm of bridges and bends as the trail moves between natural areas and lively neighborhoods. It’s an easy choice for an out-and-back ride, a relaxed weekend stroll, or a longer point-to-point that lets you cover a lot of Indy without constantly battling traffic
The Millersville Village area blends historic charm with natural beauty on Indianapolis’s northeast side. Centered near Fall Creek and 56th Street, it offers local dining, a grocery store, and easy access to parks and trails. With its suburban village-like character and scenic surroundings, Millersville provides a peaceful, authentic slice of Indy life.

The Fall Creek Greenway is one of Indy’s most scenic waterside routes, tracing the wooded bends of Fall Creek through the city’s northeast side. The paved trail runs about 13 miles between Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park and the IU and Purdue Indianapolis campuses downtown, giving you a surprisingly nature-forward experience without ever leaving Indianapolis.
What makes this trail special is how often it feels like you’ve slipped into a ribbon of parkland. You’ll roll through shady corridors where the creek stays close, then pop out into stretches framed by established neighborhoods and classic Indy park scenery. The route is also designed for lingering: along the way, there are overlooks and informal canoe access points, plus trailhead-style spots that can include simple amenities like seating and other small features that make it easy to turn an hour ride into a half-day wander. A personal favorite is at 30th Street trailhead, where a colorful Pacers-themed basketball court pops against the historic backdrop of the College Avenue bridge.
Fall Creek is full of built-in destination energy. On the north end, it brushes right up against Fort Harrison State Park for a bigger nature add-on. As you head south, the corridor ties together a string of parks and trail-adjacent destinations, including several organized trailheads and parks like Skiles Test Nature Park and Graham Edward Martin Park. It passes through Millersville Village if you want to turn your ride into a coffee or lunch mission. Farther down, it runs by the Indiana State Fairgrounds, which is also where the broader trail network starts to stack. The trail intersects the Monon Trail, Central Canal Towpath, and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, making it easy to stitch together longer routes.
The trail runs right by Ivy Tech Community College, and through several blocks of connector trail and access path along Illinois Street you can reach the front door of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
Currently, the Fall Creek Greenway is separate from the unpaved Upper Fall Creek Loop Trail further upstream near Geist Reservoir. The Upper Fall Creek Loop Trail circles an overflow pond and runs along Fall Creek Road, just south of 79th Street. It’s ideal for walking and jogging.
